GLOBAL GOALS WEEK 2023
This week was Global Goals week, an annual week of action, awareness, and accountability for the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Out of the 1,000 cities taking part just 2 cities highlighted Global Goals week, New York and Liverpool and I was lucky enough to attend one of the many events across the Liverpool City region, the Building a Sustainable City Beyond 2030 event hosted by the 2030 hub and Momentum Group.
The effects of climate crisis are right Infront of us and we are way behind at the halfway point to 2030 there is no time to wait we must act now. For fourteen years the islanders of Carteret Atoll, the world first Climate refugees, have become emblematic of international community’s lack of consideration for climate injustice.
What can we as individuals do?
The property industry can hugely drive change in the journey to 2030. With UK houses contributing to 40% of the countries carbon emissions we, in the built environment, can make a real change. The future is likely to
see a mix of low-carbon technologies used for heating: electrification of heat for buildings
using hydronic (air-to-water or ground-to water) heat pumps, heat networks and
potentially switching the natural gas in the grid to low-carbon hydrogen. But there needs to be a shift in mindset and instead of thinking about the cost of making these changes we need to consider the cost of not doing them. When you calculate the whole life cycle costings of decarbonising our homes the savings are huge for people and the planet.
Lets make the changes we need today together we can make a difference inch by inch….
